Borderline Personality Disorder
My interest in borderline personality disorder has been there as long as I can remember. Millions of people suffer from it, right here in the United States. Not only does the person with the disorder suffer but their families do as well. And by suffer, I mean in a big way. The cutting, bleeding, feelings of emptiness, binging, purging, violence, isolation, drug abuse, law breaking behavior, suicidal gestures, impulsiveness, poor relationships, and fear of abandonment are just some of the behaviors you may be living with. How does your family or significant other feel? Do they feel isolated? Downtrodden? Depressed? Held hostage by your suicidal gestures? My goal for those who have this disorder is to assist them in learning how to manage their emotions without lashing out, mutilating, numbing or pushing others away. Do I believe that BPD disorder ever just goes away completely? No, I don’t, but I do believe that you can live with it. I believe the intensity of emotion can be funneled towards good instead of self-destruction. I believe the intensity can be lessened. I believe that you can learn to stop self-mutilating and hating yourself. And I believe that you can have good relationships based on love and mutual self-respect.
I use DBT, or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, with those who have borderline personality disorder or traits of the disorder. You, however must be committed to this process. You must understand that this type of therapy is about modeling and teaching you how to interact with others. You must understand the concept of “boundaries” and know that your therapist will enforce them. Boundaries like “no show fees” because you do not show up for session because it hurts too much to face the pain, or discussing how you are hurting others or how others have hurt you. From my experience, many with BPD have faced horrific abuse and I understand your need for control - I truly do. I will be here to help you process that abuse, but I will call out inappropriate behaviors, teach you how to set boundaries, and how to respect the boundaries of others. I understand that this will turn some potential clients off, but I am a very upfront person and I expect the same out of my clients.
For those that are reading this that care about someone that has borderline personality disorder, I am available for counseling for you as well. I understand that everyone has their limits and you do not deserve the abuse, roller coaster emotions, or isolation that loving someone with borderline personality disorder can entail. My time with you is about setting your own boundaries, deciding how vested you are in this relationship, and learning how to get your life back.
